2 TODAY S GOSPEL: Matthew 17:1-13 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" He replied, "Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. 3 ABOUT VARTAVAR The pagan feast Vartavar marked the harvest each year and was traditionally associated with the goddess Asdghig. To replicate Asdghig's bathing, people would sprinkle each other with rose water and hold a special festival of roses during this joyful feast. Additionally, family members would adapt their children's games and toys for frolicking water games. With equal glee Armenians rejoiced over agricultural abundance during Vartavar. It either preceded or coincided with the feast of the harvest, which was the Armenian New Year (Navasart-Amanor). It was most likely held between August 1st and 6th. Different regions in Armenia celebrated the harvest with different traditions. For instance, in the district of Koghtn it was customary to hold a ritual during this festival involving newly budded green wheat. In other regions, special rituals were directly connected with animal husbandry. The Armenian Meliks marked that day with feasts held in the fields and rituals dedicated to fertility such as bringing fruits as gifts to future brides and grooms, throwing fruits on their heads, or sending them apples. Throughout much of Armenia, families enjoyed delicious harisa as part of the feast. NEW! 4 St. John s Tuesday Lunch Club St. John s Tuesday Lunch Club presented the program How to Sleep like a Baby...Again!, its first in an on-going series of talks and demonstrations on topics that matter to people as they age. It was held on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at St. John s Rec Center. Julie Jenkins from Manoogian Manor Assisted Living was the speaker and easily held the attention of the 36 attendees. Getting a good night s sleep is sometimes difficult as we age. But once we understand the keys for sleeping well, we can start to sleep like a baby again. Julie explained that although we sleep 1/3 of our lives we do not necessarily get a good night s rest. She explained a number of reasons why sleep is challenging to the elderly and provided ways to help reduce or eliminate the challenges so that we can sleep like a baby. If you did not attend this interesting and informative presentation and you do not sleep like a baby, come to the Tuesday Lunch Club and speak to one or more of those who did attend. You just might learn something to help you, and you will definitely enjoy the camaraderie and good food. Julie will be here again on August 14, 2012 to discuss Watching Your Step Fall Prevention. Join us for this FREE presentation beginning promptly at 11:10 am before the lunch. Please make a reservation with May in the Church office ( ) for the presentation to ensure that our caterer will have ample food available for those who stay with us for lunch. Lunch cost is $7/person. And for those of you who are Early Birds, consider joining the men and women who come to bake on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 11:00 am in the Main Kitchen. Then join the Tuesday Lunch Club for an informative presentation and lunch. This presentation is open to all. 7 WOMEN S GUILD NEWS Festival Baking Please join us 9 am-noon in St. John s Kitchen. On Monday, July 16th we will be making Khalkha. On Tuesday, July 17th we will be making Sou Beoreg. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Festival baking continues on Mondays and Tuesdays through the summer months. Any time you can give is appreciated. For information contact Dolly Matoian Evening Bake - On Monday evenings, July 16th and August 20th we will be making Cheoreg from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those of you who cannot join the daytime bakes.
